Tiger Woods closes with five birdies over his last nine holes to trail tournament leader Stuart Appleby by one shot Friday.

The first-round leaders at the U.S. Open stumbled badly, and now Woods is just one shot behind new leader Stuart Appleby.

Unknown American Justin Hicks holds the clubhouse lead after the first round of the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, carding a three-under-par 68 to lie one shot ahead of Rocco Mediate and Stuart Appleby and four better than the returning Tiger Woods.
